“Keep What’s Yours” is a new campaign that Owens Community College Safety and Security is running on both campuses.
To decrease campus theft, Owens Safety and Security has created a system of identifying textbooks.
Students may bring textbooks to the Safety and Security Department in Alumni Hall to have them marked with a tag that can only be seen under ultraviolet light.
Julee Cope, Chief of Safety and Security, will write the owner’s driver’s license number on the inside cover of a textbook, then stamp the book with the words “Safety and Security.”
If the book is lost and someone else attempts to sell it back to the Bookstore, the ultraviolet ink will reveal the book was stolen.
A driver’s license can be presented to prove ownership of the textbook.
Cope also recommends putting an identifying mark on one of the pages of the book. as another way to prove ownership.
“We are offering a crime prevention program. Please take advantage of it,” said Cope.
