Letter from the Editor: Farewell Quesadilla Thursday

Last semester, I wrote an article in The Outlook about my favorite unknown
Owens holiday—Chicken Quesadilla Thursday. It started out as a joke.
I only thought a few of my friends would read it and it would be over,
but I was wrong.
The Thursday following publication, the sign outside the SHAC read “Happy
Quesadilla Thursday!” Quesadilla revenue broke records, I quickly
gained first name basis with the SHAC workers—who always had a hot
quesadilla ready for me as soon as I got to campus on Thursdays—and
I’d overhear random students talking about how great the quesadillas
were.
I missed these treats over Semester Break, and I still can’t figure
out how to make them taste right on the quesadilla grill my folks got
me for Christmas.
But alas, all good things must be allowed in variance only. Otherwise,
they’re not as precious.
Sadly, I was informed by SHAC staff that Quesadilla Thursday will no longer
be every Thursday, thereby going against the very definition of “Quesadilla
Thursday.” Due to the overwhelming demand and the personal strain
that goes into making a quesadillic masterpiece (don’t reach for
a dictionary, I made that word up), the SHAC’s quesadillas will
now only be served occasionally.
Thursday will remain Mexicana Day at the SHAC, but quesadillas won’t
be on the menu every week. Instead, the SHAC will experiment with new
Mexicana delicacies like enchiladas. Plus, although I am fully faithful
to Thursday’s quesadillas, the tacos and taco salad are pretty awesome
as well.
We must press on. Our food is gone, but never lost. Chicken Quesadilla
Thursday will live on in the hearts of all who took my advice and joined
in the celebration, as well as all who discovered the holiday on their
own. We shall meet again, some Thursday, some week. In the meantime, let’s
all enjoy expanding our repertoires and indulging our taste buds with
enchiladas, tacos, and taco salad. We might wind up with a whole new holiday
that needs to be celebrated.
But on the occasional Thursday that we do see our beloved quesadillas
again, I suggest we rename the holiday, “Be Incredibly Nice to the
SHAC Cooks Who Made Quesadillas Today Day.”
