Helpful Tips for New and Returning Students

New semesters at Owens always promise new students. These students could be returning to school after some years, transferring from another college, or just beginning their college years. With that in mind, here are some tips to help the semester go more smoothly for everyone.

• Maintain good relationships with your instructors: Classes are easier to get through when you have open lines of communication with the instructors. If you need help or have questions, ask. That’s what they are there for.

•Make friends with your classmates: Exchange email addresses and phone numbers with at least two people in each class. This should make it easier to get notes and information if you miss class. These new friends also make good study partners for tests and quizzes.

• Do your homework as it is assigned: Procrastinating gets you nowhere. Working on assignments as they are assigned reduces the stress of all-nighters the night before a big paper is due. It also leaves time to clear up questions as they come up.

• Get to class: Showing up is half the battle. The more classes you miss, the lower your final grade will likely end up being. Only miss class if you absolutely have to!

•Get involved: Joining clubs and sports is a good way to make friends with similar interests as you. This can help you later with resumes and jobs.

•Remember: Everyone was new on campus at one time. Ask when you need help and help others when you can.
