On Tuesday September 17th, Dr. Mahjabeen Islam gave a presentation on her American Journey. Dr. Islam’s presentation covered her life’s surprises, shocks, misunderstandings, and understandings.
After graduating from Dow Medical College, Dr. Islam searched for a school to get her graduate degree. Coming to Toledo Ohio, she experienced her first shock; Karachi Pakistan, her home city, had a population of 10 million in 1982, while Toledo had a population of 750,000.
Once she had her graduate degree she got her first job doing Histories and Physicals at St. Vincent hospital. Dr. Islam described it as “Extremely intimidating but very interesting.” She had to adjust to an American system, coming from a British system in Pakistan.
On January 21, 1984, hers was the first wedding at the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo. It was also the coldest day in 100 years, being -21̊ F.
In 1997, Dr. Islam was a cofounder of the United Muslim Association of Toledo. Then in 2007 she was elected council of the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo. Finally in 2012 she was elected president of the Islamic Center of 2012.
Dr. Islam lives her life based on her 4 C’s of leadership: Consensus Building, Conviction, Courage, and Consultation, “With absolute integrity connecting all of them” Dr. Islam says.
In April 2013, Dr. Islam was awarded the Leadership Award by the Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) for her actions after the recent arson at the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo.
